How are instant ice packs used when someone has heat stroke?

Heat stroke is deadly serious. If you suspect someone has heat stroke call 911 immediately. Then move the victim out of the heat and begin to cool the body. Instant ice packs can be placed in the groin, under the arms, and behind the neck if ice is not available.

Shouldn’t we just put ice on it?

Um… Actually, don’t do that.

Most instant cold packs, and virtually all gel packs, ice bags, even mom’s frozen peas can get too cold — impeding microcirculation and perfusion.

Cold Snap stays in the optimal therapeutic range for managing inflammation following trauma (sub 15ºC) over 45% longer than other top Medical-Grade brands, even those using Calcium Ammonium Nitrate chemistries. 1

Applying ice directly to the skin can impede microcirculation and perfusion, damage tissues, and slow the healing process.

What is the biggest problem with instant cold packs?

According to analysis of 4,200 Amazon Instant Cold Pack reviews the three most common complaints are:

1. Didn’t stay cold.
2. The cold pack was difficult to “pop”.
3. It leaked.

Other instant cold packs say to wrap them in a soft cloth or towel before applying?

Some other instant cold packs can get too cold. Ours last longer than competitors tested against (which includes leading brands) because the optimized formulation runs more evenly.

Additionally, wrapping an instant cold pack in a towel is a practice started by a lawyer vs. a clinician. These packs typically weigh less than a quarter of a kilogram and they are about half water. There is simply not enough cold produced by the endothermic reaction by that volume of chemistry to cool the surface of the skin through a towel.

Note: Calcium Ammonium Nitrate chemistry used by some manufacturers can aggravate skin and will absolutely burn scrapes or cuts if those bags leak.

Additional Note: WE DO NOT use Calcium Ammonium Nitrate.

Our Instant cold packs are made with water and Carbamide.

What is the optimal therapeutic temperature range for cold therapy?

Skin temperatures of 50–59 °F (10–15 °C) are optimal. Cold Snap produces temperatures in that range for 30% longer than competitors tested against, despite using safer carbamide chemistry.

Should we shake it every once and awhile?

Absolutely. All instant cold pack should be shaken a few times every 5-10 minutes. We agitate samples (yes, our and competitors) when testing to emulate a human moving.
